Title: Ohlins steering damper service
Post by: FTM on May 13, 2013, 07:37:07 pm
Anyone know where I can get one overhauled, mines fecked and I don't trust the shops around my way to do it right. Anyone had one serviced recently?

Dropped it off at Crescents Ohlins service centre in Verwood, Dorset, the bloke in the shop says it feels like it has a bit of air in it but otherwise it should still be okay to use without a service. I explained it felt like it was seized when going slow but works okay at speed but he thinks it could be steering head bearings. I told him the bike rides great without the damper but is shite with it on when going slow but I don't think he believed me. Anyway it's getting a service so we'll see when I get it back.

AND .... he kept pushing and pulling the damper and said it seemed fine to him. We'll see when I get it back and fitted.

Picked up my steering damper today, Crescent couldn't service it because one of the bushes was swollen and tight so rather than risk damaging it they sent it off to Ohlins. Nice and smoothie slidie now  happy119.

Seems a bit pricey, but if the bike rides better now its money well spent as a new one is around £350 I think

I think that's a fair price tbh.
You've got a top notch damper which should give several years of service.
You know it's history.
AND you've got some old bushes...what's not to like  smiley-laughing002.gif

I was quoted about £115 but as they had to send it off to Ohlins it cost an extra £20.

Went to fit the damper and it looks like some prick has removed it in the past without taking out the grub screw so now I'll have to repair the thread before I put it back on.

Just replaced the tyres on my bike, the front was well past its best and the back only had another couple of hundred miles left in it. The bike handled like shit on the way to the tyre shop. On the way home it handled just the same  frown1 it's okay at speed but going slow and it feels like I've got a flat and it wont turn at all then sometimes it turns so quick it feels like I'm on ice. Service time for the Ohlins again I think.

Well it's not the Ohlins damper, I took it off and just did 50 miles and it's exactly the same. Got to be the steering head bearings so when the missus gets back from the caravan tomorrow I'll get her to put some weight on the back of the bike so I can check the bearings.

Bearings it is then  thumbdown1z. I'll try the Aprilia dealers about 100 yds from where I'm working and if they don't have any I'll give Griff a ring and see what he has.
