Big Tuono meeting in Italy in 2018 I believe. It's the 15th anniversary of the first Tuono (16 actually but so few Tuono's were released in 2002 I don't think they count  thumbdown1z) and I plan on being there.

I'm in for this - prefer June myself - it's not quite so hot earlier - will fit in to suit group.

Can't really manage more than a total of 7 day trip

Best place I have ridden way better than Alps

All just thoughts atm men. It'd be good to get something booked before crimbo though then everything else can work around it. I've not committed to anything this year with the daughters wedding and the other thing I did  lookup1
Same place would be magic. Infantado?

Title: Re: PICOS 2018
Post by: Vinny on June 28, 2017, 10:36:45 pm
Booking before end of December usually works out 20% cheaper than waiting until the new year

Yep Hotel Infantado Potes

New pricing usually comes out around end of October

A venue stay may give an opportunity to cover so new roads?

Throw some dates up men and we'll see what works by October then book it? If we get this nailed in early the ladies will have to plan all the family shit around it  winking1

I've no objections to staying at the Infantado the whole time or a couple of nights somewhere else, then three at Infantado?

Out of curiosity, how much roughly would be needed for the trip and what sort of milage a day would be covered.

Title: Re: PICOS 2018
Post by: Vinny on June 29, 2017, 04:35:19 pm
Previous trips have been just under £500 for hotel & ferries. Prices will be 20% higher at least
Add fuel for 200 miles per day plus food and beer

Whitney's & Slims bar bill was probably double any normal consumption. I spent around £30 per day all in

Whitney came on the trip?  Nice to have someone to lead the singalong over a pint I guess.

Had the last night in Cangas de Onsis last time around bit more action for the last night & the first night in St Vincent, Nice sea food restaurant.

The hotel up the road towards the cable car had a better pool & breakfast. Short taxi ride into Potes!

For the 3 of us in a 4 bunk cabin it was £1066 total, split 3 ways is £355.33 each return paying a £40 deposit and the rest just before departure  smile2

3 in a 4 bed cabin. A bit tight but you can throw yer clobber on the spare bunk.

Post by: Vinny on July 28, 2017, 08:20:04 pm
When you book with Brittany ferries as a holiday i.e. ferry and hotel the cabin is free and you automatically get a 4 berth for every two people / bikes

Best to wait and get all the names then book by telephone as a group - always get the best deals this way

Have to wait for the 2018 holiday prices these usually come out in late October early November

Was it you Tiffa we shared that local special set menu with.  bean stew like it had been forgotten for abour three hours with that left us gagging.

Found the best solution was to just go to that bar that gives free papas with every round of drinks.

Recomend this place as a step up in quality from Infantado, Far superior quality breakfast without Hawk eye making sure you dont steal the danish pastries for your lunch box. excellent views and much more accesible pool. The restaurant was great & still only a short taxi ride from Potes.

I'll be stopping the first night in St Vincente or Cangas de Onsis & moving on to The Picos from there.  The ferry was a couple of hours later the last time we went so no night time travel either.

& I'm happy to organise it.

Lads, I've changed the title of this thread. Start another if anyone is going on a diferrent date.

These ferries suit us three, datewise and timewise. We have an extra days ride to the ferry, and back home so twas a tad tricky. Anyroads, the dates are set for us and we can work the rest of the years shit around it  happy88

No think I mentioned earlier that the dates suited so I'm happy to arrange the same dates, 3rd - 10th July. Have had my calander for next year and finish slightly earlier.

Like you mentioned Vinny can't say anything else until the holiday rates come out in November, but it's usually about £550.00 each if deposits are in By December deadline based on two sharing. You get a 4 berth Cabin on the ferry between two. So no need to pull down the bunk beds. We had late additions last time the price for those was about £40.00 more. As a group we split it between us, what's a tenner between friends?

The Hotel in Cosgoya is 5 mins up the road from Potes towards Fuente De (Where the cable car is) Really nice rooms and panoramic views, excellent food in the restaurant and the Breakfast was also excellent. Nice pool convenient to the bar. As you know Vinny the road up to Fuent De is a nice windy road which is a great way to start & finish the day & Potes is ess than 10 Euros in a Taxi.

Stayed here first night last time. A short walk from the town centre overlooking the town & Bay.  Good sea food restaurants an hourish from Santander.

http://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/holiday-search/Spain/cantabria/San-Vicente-de-la-Barquera/hotels/HS0463?priceDate=2017-10-0

Stayed Here the last night. Great location, Beautiful hotel & rooms & a bit more action in Cangas but the management were't overly impressesd with a contingernt of thirsty bikers. Only bottled beer & Drank the bar dry within an hour. Didn't make any effort to restock it. Breakfast was crap. basically Orange juice, cereals, Danish & Croissant.

http://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/holiday-search/Spain/asturias/Cangas-de-Onis/hotels/HS1334?priceDate=2017-10-04

I'm open to where to stop the first Night but inclined to only change hotels once & stay the remaining time up in the Picos. As the ferry is a couple of hours later there's not such a rush to leave early to get there.

Don't get that Mick  what5

It's 24 hrs to get there even if you leave 2 hours later - still travelling through the night but arriving 2 hrs later therefore possibly just too late to ride to Potes maybe not? ey1

Thats what I'm saying V. Nice to break the journey in 1/2 and have a night somewhere different. If you look at Nob's Booking the ferry doesn't dock Until 18.30 local time by the time you've cleared customs etc and gone an hour down the road it's going to be getting towards Dusk. Following day can either travel anti clockwise the long way via Cangas for lunch then up through Rhiana to Potes or the clockwise route which is probably shorter via Aguilar de Campo past the place where the cows roam freely about the place. Check in and acclimatise for the afternoon. Possibly do the cable car as still not achieved that misson yet.

Hey Mick

The dates work fine for me also so first week of July it is.

Happy with the hotel at Cosgaya as well

I don't agree with the ferry timing - I prefer the same ferry as Nob & co

The run to the hotel is 90 mins so plenty of daylight even if you take your time and take 2 hours to get there plus I love the ride up to Potes on the first night after being on the ferry for 24 hours. Really starts the holiday off well in my opinion.

So for me same ferry as Nob and travel to Cosgaya first night

The only down side to Cosgaya is that you always have to travel out back to Potes to be able to go anywhere else - I accept it is not very far

Spoke to Brittany Ferries today - 2 months minimum before the Hotel prices are available - but the saving is worth waiting for

There's only one ferry V & it's now about two hours later than the last time we went. Look at Nob's ticket it now gets in at 6.30pm.  Thought it was mid afternoon when we went three years ago. Am happy to go along with any consensus on where to stay on the first night but would rather not travel up that Ravine in darkness.

Cosgoya to Potes is about 8 Miles & the ride is worth it especially with the superior accomadation.

These are the same ferry times leaves 15:15 arrives Santander 18:15 the times have not changed in the last 5 years - just as per Nob's booking

As far as I aware official twilight in Spain in July is around 9:30 - 10:30 pm defendant upon the position of the earth relative to the sun i.e. the equinox

So we have at least 3 hours of day light to ride to the hotel

Total Price £1124.00  (£562.00 each)

Find yerself a partner & get it on.

2018 hotel prices have now been released so we can get booking

Ferry on Tuesday 3rd July return Monday 9th July

Ferry plus cabin 2 sharing 2 motorbikes - Hotel Del Oso, Potes - Cosgaya 5 night B&B

Total cost approx is £1000 - £1020  i.e. £500 to £510 per person - £40 per head secures the booking

Reason for the variance is the way they take the booking requires the 2nd bike to be booked separately - this price can vary daily

It will only get more expensive with time

Seems like a good deal to me

Who wants to get it booked up?

I love my tuoldo but made the mistake of taking a V4 tuono home fae work. Best thing I've ever ridden Rico. I know it's not a twin but I liked the way it makes it's power. The handling was a different level.

Yeah mate, couldn't resist it. First bike I've rode since owning the Tuoldo that doesn't hurt my hip or back. Needs a couple of tweeks but that will happen over the winter.

No Aldo I wont be joining you lot in the Pico's unless I find I have some free time then.
Tis Nob's machine and V's behind, with I think Slims Triumph and Wog's Harley hiding at the back. From the 2014 Pico's tour, best bit though is the Cider Restaurant to the left, this is how they pour it!

We have decided to go to northern Spain on holidays touring from Bilbao to Porto in my van, late June-20th July.
Any recommendations on where to go & what to see?
I'm driving the van down, but the family are flying to Bilbao with Easyjet as the flights were really cheap, flying out to Bilbao then back from Porto.
Planning on camping for most of the time but also looking at hiring a villa for a week somewhere.
I've never been to the area before but would appreciate any tips since you've been there a few times.
Wife is interested in the Picos and the teenagers want to see the coast.
It might be possible to meet up, but by the time you get there I might be over towards Santiago de Compostella.

If youre there 6th July  theres the running of the bulls in Pamplona. Other tourist attractions a medievil town, dinasour park & other touristy shit. I'll dig my backpackers guide out and have a peak.  LLanes or St Vincente de la barquere is alright for an overnighter near the sea, also plenty going on at cangas de Onsis for the kids, white water rafting & THAT KIND OF TAC. iF YOU'RE GOING UP TO THE pICOS THEN THERES A CABLE CAR RIDE about 10 miles from where we normally stay at Potes. in Fuente de.  If you're hrading towards Porto the ride from Potes to Riano is epic

Did Pamploma in May.
Beautiuful city, mostly undergroung parking which is a pain.
Rode down a one way street (the wrong way of course  smiley-laughing002.gif)
Got pulled by two plain clothes cops.
Pretended we couldn't understand them, and tried to insist we rode a further 20 yds to the end of the street.
One of them started to pull his gun...that was the moment we decided to turn around... smiley-laughing002.gif
Best steak ever. Best wine ever.
Proper food, unlike the Potes mush.
Recommended.

If anyone travelling from afar wants to crash at mine for a night to break up the journey just shout, I can rustle some camp beds up.

The woman from Brittany Ferries phoned me up today to tell me Hotel del Osso say all their single rooms are booked on the 5th. She's thinks there are doubles available but is waiting for the hotel to get back to her. No matter what I'll still be going.

My missus has a caravan on Hayling Island if anyone needs somewhere to stop the night before. The site owners are a bit snobby so we have to inform them if we have motorbikes arriving, don't want to scare the old biddies you know.

I'll phone up the Ferry lady tomorrow to find out what is happening. They had singles for all the other days, just not the 5th.

This is Robbies booking number, can you see what they have to say, Ill not be home from work till quite late.   UK3453X you could possibly share a twin for just one night.

Just done a head count, we're up to 15 Now.

Put myself down to share with Timothy Jones whoever he is tell him to bring some earplugs.

I phoned them up today Mick and the reason they didn't get back to me was because they had a ferry cancelled so everyone was busy in the office. She looked up the bookings, Robbies and mine and she said they were still waiting to hear back from the hotel. I'll try again tomorrow.

Cheers for holding the rooms Mick. So is Lion and Robbie the same person? I thought Robbie was a mate of a mate etc. If Brittany ferries don't come up with something by the end of the day I'll book the ferry and hotel over the road separate tomorrow. I'll double up with Robbie if that's okay with him.
This is all new to me this booking up lark, I usually just jump on the bike and go, saves all the fannying about.  smile1

Think theresw a l;oad of bikers filling the Gaff up.

I've alrerady booked the hotel rooms over the road & paid a substantial deposit, nearly £300.00, just book the ferry if you need to. Robbie & Lion are the same person, he wants his own room, must be a cross dresser or something like that.
You could share a cabin on the ferry to save a few bucks though.

Robbie will have to try and get a twin at the Osso or failing that the one over the road. If there's nowt available he can always share with me at the Dosso.

They cant give Lion Robbie a room for Thursday the 5th, the rest of the week is ok.  If somebody can put him up for one night that would be grand & I can go ahead with his booking. With a bit of luck there might be a cancellation between now & then.

Think we're going on the 3rd Dave.
Ferry doesn't sail until 5 ish.
So loads & loads of time to spank it down there.
The lads from north of the border will probs need to split it, or share a van down.
FTM on the other hand...well...he's just a jammy git.
Ferry is at the bottom of his garden.

just wondering if anybody knows, if there is somewhere you would be able to get some new tyres fitted close too where we are staying, i know we don't know yet how much life we are going to have left in our tyres before we leave. But i wouldn't want to change my tyres if i had at a guess a thousand plus miles life in my tyres before we go,

I'm sure that place where Wog got his tractor fixed did tyres, I doubt they have our sizes in stock though. I think these are motorcycle tyre dealers in Cantabria. http://www.talleresmecanicos.net/talleres-motos-en-cantabria/ . There must be plenty around it'll just be a case of finding the nearest.

any doubts about the tyres , just fit new before you go and save the old ones for another day.
that way you don't have to worry about that when your away , plus you would end up with tyres not the same make as you had ,and it would spoil your hols, don't no what they charge up your way but down here i fit new tyres to loose wheels for £10 a wheel,
so not worth the bother hope this helps . happy88

that way you don't have to worry about that when your away , plus you would end up with tyres not the same make as you had ,and it would spoil your hols, don't no what they charge up your way but down here i fit new tyres to loose wheels for £10 a wheel,
so not worth the bother hope this helps . happy88

Just not worth the hassle mucker.

Too True...

Many Many moons ago a few of us went down to Switz & Austria...... One mate turned up with a barely legal front tyre.... he'd allegedly spent hours prepping his bike but hadnt looked at the tyres.
After much piss  take he said he would get one while we were away, alas that was not to be..... nobody down there stocked 16" front tyres for his GPZ900 (and he wasted so much time trying to find one) - he had a major cob on for days riding around with a bald tyre.

And to cap it all off..... there was a brown envelope waiting for him when he got home - His bike wasnt taxed, thought he would do it when he got back - they did let him off tho !

Dont risk it - twill ruin ya trip.

I think the nearest tyre stockist will be Santander there is a choice of 10 centres

As above, fit new tyres before the trip. £10 a wheel at my local tyre place too, so to have the old ones taken off and put back on when you get back would only be £40 - worth it for the peace of mind.

just wondering if anybody knows, if there is somewhere you would be able to get some new tyres fitted close too where we are staying, i know we don't know yet how much life we are going to have left in our tyres before we leave. But i wouldn't want to change my tyres if i had at a guess a thousand plus miles life in my tyres before we go,

Round trip is around a thousand miles. Change them before you go. Nearest place for new tyres is Santander which is a day wasted out of your holiday.

My last trip to Picos was 1500 miles so it fairly simple to make sure you have enough mileage and a bit spare

No excuse for leaving it close as Nob says a good slap from 15 pissed m8's plus paying for the beers on the ferry home  smiley-laughing002.gif

usually do slim, and that's what i was saying, if it would be easy too get a new set over there if needed i would, instead of throwing a pair away that still had life in them,  when it get's closer to the time if iv'e got plenty of life in them but not enough for the trip i'll just have to get the bike out more to use the tyres up.

Couple of Q’s for those who’ve been before:

How much cash do you reckon we’ll need to cover fuel, food, beers, coke, hookers, etc?

Chatting to Vinny and Mick the other week they reckon it’s too hot for leathers. So planning to wear me Rukka jacket with the thermal lining removed, then thinking of buying some well vented textile strides. Any better options?

Ahv used these pre loaded travellers cards but not all places are happy to take them.  Safe way to carry dosh but not the be all and end all.  A blend of credit card, prepaid card and good auld folding stuffed in yer sock is the way.  Yer debit cards will generally work fine in Euroland as weel.

And always choose the currency of the country you are in rather than GBP if you get the option.  Reduces charges considerably on yer statement when it hits the doormat.

Anyone notice the crappy exchange rate for the Euro currently

Post office has always been my favourite go to but 1.1 today  thumbdown1z

Sainsburys Bank the best so far 1.139

So of the pre-paid cards seem to be better but the bloke off Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis says don't use them for fuel - why not? what5

Dunno about spain, but tiz an issue in France that when you put your card in (assume at the pump) they authorise a "set" amount, say €100. This amount is charged to your card immediately . Can take a while for the correct amount to hit and the "ghost" payment to reverse.
With this you can rapidly "use" up the balance on your card, without really spending it  ..

I've still got about 500 Euro's left over from the Alps trip last year, I guessed I'd be better off saving them for this year than converting them back to pounds.

Yep - had exactly that problem in France, found out the hard way. Nearly ran out of cash at one point because of it.

Just read a post on fb that my nephew posted from The MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West

Btw I sent my shock back to Revs on Tuesday.

Phoned them today to see if they'd received it,,,,,,,,,,,,,"sorted and'll be despatched this afternoon".

Not all that confident on a shock that leaks when it's just sitting in a box.

Def need tae work fork seals every noo and again as they will "dry oot"  and will weep if nae coated wi oil.

A tip when fittin new fork seals is tae steep them in fresh fork oil for a whiley before fitting. Sat in a wee bag for years on a shelf isna ethe best.

Theres three dining areas. The restaurant,  A self service cold buffet & choice of about 4 hot dishes Motorway service station kind of affair. The cold buffet/salad bar is ok but the hot grub is a bit motorway service station kind of standard & everything comes with luke warm limp chips & IMO isnt great value for money, These two have set opening & closing times which are relatively restricted. or a pizza & baguette snacky sort of affair with wrapped plated salads etc that is open nearly all of the time closes a bit later than the others.

If you dont fancy eating your evening meal in the restaurant its certainly worth having breakfast in it as the buffet is return as often as you like & with unlimited coffee & orange juice. Theres a bit more care about the whole chibang.

It's about an 1:15 mins from Newbury

Sails 17:15 best to be at the terminal an hour before say 16:15

So 3 pm from Newbury is cutting it fine in my opinion

Tifa - Whitey do you want to meet up on the way with Slim, Jeff and me?

Could meet in the Bridgnorth area and make our way towards Oxford to pick up the A34

Could then miss out a lot of Motor way mile without much of a detour

Possible route  -

Food Stop Cafe - A442 Quatford - Kidderminster A449 - Worcester A44 - Wyre Piddle - Moreton-in-Marsh - A44 Woodstock - Oxford A34 - Newbury A34 - Winchester M3-M27-M275 to Ferry Terminal

Riding time from Quatford is 3hrs 30mins allow an hour for stops / traffic etc aim to arrive say 4:00 pm -  allows plenty of spare time and minimum motorway miles

Leave Quatford at 11:30 am

What do you think folks

Cut out most of the motorway but there is still too many trunk roads for my liking but having tried a more scenic route and failed miserably a slightly more direct approach is needed - can't be doing with a last minute rush again or getting lost in Oxford city centre - not a happy memory

The most direct route is A34; M3; M27 etc

Approx 62 miles

At legal speeds with traffic it's an hour

To do it in 30 mins is not really achievable in my opinion

Those roads are well covered by the latest speed cameras ..............good luck with keeping your licence

Have said to brother well meet between 2.30 & 3.30 at Newbury service station gives us a two hour window to get to Portsmouth b4 Boarding starts. Gilo well need to arrange to meet up somewhere on the M4 Corridor, Ill let you suggest asuitable place & time. Is Leigh Delamere a good choice ??

Leigh Delamere would work. Let is know your route South and we’ll arrange the best place to meet.

Bring. It. On.  exc1

Ill be coming straight across the M4 for Newbury, then taking the direct route from there, its about an hour from Newbury services.

Fair dinkum. In that case, yeah - Leigh Delamere looks best bet  happy88

I can't remember any fixed camera's on the A34 between Newbury and Winchester/M3 junction but there's sometimes a camera van sat on one of the bridges over the A34, loads of mates in vans have been done by that one. There is another mobile speed camera trap sometimes set up on the northbound side but it's seeable if you're heading south.

I'll leave my house, turn right, go around the first roundabout and onto the ferry  big grin1

One of my managers who travels from Southampton to Bassingstoke told me that M3 now has those small yellow cameras on the information gantries - same as M4

I use the A34 a fair bit and there is often a couple of mobile vans on route south bound from Newbury sneaky gits change locations

I miss read your email thought you put half an hour from Newbury   slaphead;

Let me just get this straight after six pints of Stowford Press so it makes sense to all.

Ferry sails 17.15hrs

Check in 45mins prior = 16.30 hrs (4.30pm)

1 Hr from Newbury = 15.30 hrs (3.30)

Absolute latest departure from Newbury  15.30 (3.30)

Suggested meet between 14.00 hrs & 15.00 to leave absoloutely no later than 15.30 allowing 1/2 hr for disasters.

Me new Kevlar jeans that I bought for the Picos arrived today (Resurgence Warrior jeans).  Fit perfectly and don’t look like Bike jeans at all, hipster skinny with nice likkle turn-ups. Fitted my new tubeless wheels with Conti TA2’s last night so took the Africa Twin for a quick spin to scrub them in.

Bristol has been a car park today, M4 and M5 are solid so people come through Bristol and clog it up with their tin boxes  angry19. So most of my ride was filtering through endless traffic in 26degC heat. I was baking in me Rukka jacket (no lining in, vents wide open) but my legs were fine, so reckon these jeans are just the ticket for hot weather. Got knee and hip armour on order separately to give more peace of mind.

I had a problem in France a few years back. Don’t recall the details, but the result was I was either charged double for fuel, or a large initial amount was taken from the card as security - upshot was I had nearly no cash for a few days.  Hence I’m thinking of just taking cash to the Picos.

I reckon mine was just shite or something in the fuel. I put the expensive stuff in by mistake, can’t remember exactly when, but it all seems to point to that. I’m not having it that they changed the ht leads as coming back fron Duc it was pretty much the same as it went in, not as bad as it was at first, but getting better gradually, week on week, but it bugged me so in it went. Put two more tanks through it now and its gone thank fuck.

Tuesdays weather looks ok for Portsmouth.   happy119

I've got an app I use that's more accurate than the Met Office one.

It gives you world wide weather predictions from multiple weather satellites.

If yer intae weather apps this one is the daddy.

Looks like light rain patches in the Picos region with Sunday being the driest,,,,,,,,,,so far.   happy88

Where are you men meeting up? I was planning on leaving here about 10 ish. That’s if I can get the Fudmeister out of bed. Sometimes you’ve got to tempt him out the pit with a chilled apple juice. Or a Granny Smiths on a pole if he’s got the jump.

Reckon filling up before we get on the ferry makes sense so we can crack on at the other end.

It’s  more for the medical cover tbh - don’t want any worries if you’re unlucky enough to be laid up in a foreign hospital.

If any bikes get damaged just break them and bring them back as parts among the rest of us.   big grin1

Slim & Geoff are meeting up at Wog's house now so we probably won't see them until Chieveley Service - reckon they will be there about 2 pm

A steady run from the food stop cafe is 2hrs 40 min ish - allowing for a stop say Moreton in the Marsh should see us arrive at Chieveley Services around 2 pm

Mick and Giles should be there around 2:30 pm

I'm guessing that Rico, Aldo and N will arrive a similar sort of time if they leave Mancuria around 10 am assuming they take the direct route

So what was the bike of the tour chaps? Which was the bike everyone secretly wishes they were on, or each their own?!?

Personally, I was a bit worried beforehand that my new Africa Twin, with only 90-odd bhp at the wheel would struggle to stay with the big bikes. In the event it hung in there, though I was caning the shit out of it at times. The only negative was the 21” front wagonwheel meant I had to really force it to turn in on the tight hairpins, and use a lot of force to make it hold a tight line. But it did it and overall I’m bloody impressed with the bike, it’s a proper all rounder.

Bike I fancied?  Probably Nob’s Mutley. I do like that bike.

I have to say as well, the cruisers looked cool as fuck, and were in the mix at all times.

Bottom line is everyone on here can ride, the bike is almost irrelevant.   yes sir

Thanks everyone for a fantastic week. Great company, great bikes , great scenery and great roads. Couldn't ask for more really....................well maybe more consistent weather might of been nice! Still made for an entertaining ride back over the mountains in the thunder storm.

I've cleaned most of the shite off me bike now. Ready for the next one. big grin1

Was a great trip and cheers Gilo, as you know I like yours and was dieying fir a go, but never found the right time. Ie, naughty roads everywhere.
I was 99’9% selling it and getting another Smt after the Fest, but it was just magnificent in every event. I reckon the traction control actually saved me from a proper off after hitting some gravel powering out of a corner on a crest of a mountain.
I've sorted the fuelling by putting the original zorst back on  lookup1 It sounds much better tbh  tuono;

Biggest biking mistake I made was selling the Smt, I’m not making it again. Its the perfect bike for me.

If you can get past the Ducati homo shit the Mutley really is a cracking bike  yes sir

Thanks!

Be time to start planning the next one soon I recon....

Amazing how everyone shuts up as soon as there is steak & chips in front of them hehe!!

Looks rather lush up that way, don’t know why but I imagined it to be a drier landscape.

The gorge to Potes

This big bear statue is actually visible from the road and we passed it a few times, its off a wee side road at the crest of the San Gloria pass. Unfortunately it looks out over a hidden valley with its arse facing the road so it looks like a rock from a distance so easily missed. Stunning views from it of a stormy Picos cos its well high up.

a zig zag thru the Pyrenees, wi maybe 2 different nighttime base stop off points tae branch oot for runs each day,  is a def good un  happy88

You dont need to go too far south either although lots of uber long twisty roads down the bottom end.

Can be pretty busy tho, camper vans, hunners of fekkin cyclists, unlike the Picos which was empty.

It looks like you all had a great trip and I've enjoyed your photos and reading your comments. I was also pleased to hear you all stayed right side up and no mechanical problems.

I arrived in Potes (Mogrovejo) on June 25th and left for the coast on Monday 2nd July, so unfortunately had to miss you all. What a good turnout!

I had a leccy mountain bike with me and managed to go over the bars on my 1st (and only) day of trail riding in the mountains. I think I cracked a rib or 2.
I got home on Tuesday 24th July, and it's only now (a month later) that I've been able to sleep properly with these ribs and I still can't lie on my front.

Yes, the Picos are lovely and I will go there again.  After that I meandered along the north coast and spent a week just south of Cap Finistere on one of the peninsulas near a place called Muros. Then we went down to Peniche just north of Lisbon and finally a couple of days in Porto from where the family flew back.

What great roads and empty motorways. Shocking to get back to Portsmouth and to be in a 250 mile traffic queue back to Preston.

Some were as in the vid and a bit rough, other roads had been resurface recently and were excellent.

g after the winter and the lack of local authority money to repair potholes and totally fukked surfaces at home, I'd say we were well used to what the Spanish roads threw at us.   happy119

That second video Aldo is the road that I think was as slippery as fuck. You'd get bits that were grippy and smooth then some parts that were covered in some yellow stuff (or was it red) and slippy then there'd be lines of gravel then damp patches. I had a few slides and squeaky bum moments on that road ........ but it was great fun  happy88

Great stuff Ali, really enjoyed that day out, The final sector of that day had been on my bucket list for a couple of years. Tony set a great pace to follow. As others have said the lack of traffic and virtually empty roads makes the Picos great and well worth the visit. Will return again one day but looking for new experiences next time out.

These are all worth a visit

Covadonga. 12km south-east of Cangas de Onís, Covadonga is the historic site of the battle that shaped Spain's destiny, and a major pilgrimage destination. The cathedral is stunningly situated in a deep green forested valley, next to the sacred cave and waterfall. Covadonga has bars, restaurants, and hotels, and is a gateway to the national park.
Lakes Ercina and Enol. These beautiful mountain lakes are almost 1000m above Covadonga, reached by 12km of steep winding road. There are various viewpoints and car-parks, some bar-restaurants, and many walking options, as well as the national park visitor's centre and the adjacent mines of Buferrera.
Karst Museum. At Santiyan, south of Cangas de Onís, this installation focuses on the cave systems of the area.

Arenas de Cabrales. Another gateway to the national park, just to the north of the mountains, this town has shops, bars, restaurants, hotels, and walking routes. The area of Cabrales is famous for its strong blue cheese. On the edge of town towards the national park is a cheese museum set inside a cave, whilst a short drive away in Asiegu is the "route of cheese and cider" (www.rutalquesuylasidra.com). A few kilometres west of town is a viewpoint of Picu Uriellu, the Naranjo de Bulnes.

Bulnes. This small mountain village nestles in a deep valley of the central massif, and can be reached by funicular railway from Poncebos, 6km south of Arenas de Cabrales. Bulnes has a small selection of cafes, bars, and places to stay. Short walks from Bulnes lead to the village of Upper Bulnes, and a viewpoint of Picu Uriellu.

But it's not unexpected. I've been there in October a couple of times and there has been a heavy frost with ice on the roads in the valleys. The tops of the mountains all had fresh white stuff on them, I was surprised but the local said it's normal.

Slightly soiled KTM orange cover for example  big grin1  think there's a wee pouch, big sockets, a shock, a well used tail bag and various other stuff all waiting for a new owner that should know better.   happy119
