Where are we going then? The Pyrenees or Northern Portugal would be my preferred choices. I'm not too fond of very hot places.

July, the longest day is in July innit  scratching1.

Just had a google and this is what they do in Portugal on the longest day..... Portugal holds a street party with balloons and brightly coloured paper decorations. Strangely, they also bang each other over the head with rubber hammers for good luck.  what5

Prefer trifle meself.

Just started to read a book by some dick called Steven Mason about a ride to Norway he did. I was looking forward to it on me olidis as FTM enjoyed it there. Anyroads after a couple of pages I thought, mmm this blokes a bit of a big head. After 8 pages I thought he was a complete wanker. After 9 pages it was confirmed. Didn’t get to 10 as it’s in the bin.

So, anyone for Norway, or round there?

Norway is a fantastic place...

But start saving now.

Food and beer is extortionate...... wuz £7 a pint back in 2007.....

But the locals are fookin fab as are the roads and views....

"But" you can't get a direct ferry there from the UK anymore... you have to get across to Holland and either another ferry from Denmark or ride around.... takes a fook load of time....

Norway is easily doable, what you do is stay in a Hytte, they are basic cabins with a fridge and cooking facilities and just about every village has a campsite with cabins. Buy your beer from a supermarket and it's cheaper than you'd pay in a pub back home and also buy and cook your own food to. The roads are the best in the world. Imagine Scotland but hotter, 5 times bigger and a smaller population. Once you've been you'll want to go back every year. Did I mention it'll be almost 24 hours of daylight and most petrol station accept cards 24 hours a day. What are you waiting for? Life's too short for fannying about, get out and do it. You wont regret it.

Happy to organise any trip but I can only take a maximum of 7 days

From what I can see there is no direct ferry from UK to Norway - there is a freight ferry from Immingham / Hull

This makes Norway a longer trip than I can take on next year

Black Forrest seems to be popular this is a 7 hour ride plus stops so probably 9 hours in total from Calais - pretty crappy journey - hard slog but doable in one day which gives 5 days around the Forrest - perhaps pop in at Nurburgring?       Is there enough around there for 5 days riding?

Northern Portugal is doable from Santander - 5 hours to Porto - don't know the area so not sure whats there

Seems like July is the most popular time to try and include the greatest number so how about week commencing Monday 8th July?

The freighter from Immingham stopped accepting motorbikes a couple of years ago. They don't have a problem with the bikes it's the riders, because riding a bike isn't our profession then we are classed as passengers and they aren't allowed to carry passengers. Truck drivers are doing a job so they don't count as passengers.

Just googled the route from Pompey to Kinsarvik in Norway and it's 30 hours (1,260 miles), that's with a 6 hour delay because of traffic (probably the M25  smile1). I'd say it's a days ride from Calais to northern Denmark and then a ferry over to Norway that takes from memory about 4 hours. They run every 3-4 hours in the summer iirc.

I doubt very much I'd be allowed to go on this one though by the missus because I might never come back  big grin1.

South Norways is no use either. its up the middle and west coast is where its at bikin and scenic wise.  Norway is a massively long country and not to be underestimated so ye definitely need mair than a week tae make a decent trip work.   And thats on top of the days  just getting there and back bit.

Germany is very good and accessible, easy via Holland or Belgium from the likes Newcastle or Hull etc which might suit the majority?
Except mibbe FTM of course  winking1

Anyroads ahm already booked up for Picos and a North Spain/Portugal jaunt same time wi Wee Mo so thats where ahl be.

The more I think of this the more it makes sense. We could even meet in Ireland so everyone could make their own way. Start down Cork. Through the Wicklow Mountains. The Wild Atlantic way to Connemara and maybe back via Belfast?  Four nights in Ireland should do it.
Be a giggle.

Thoughts?

It’s €4.50 a pint in Ireland. Wine is about €20 a bottle in pubs/bars. Food is generally very reasonable, a little bland if your a chilli/garlic head like moi, but I never had a bad meal in the 18 months ish I was there. Petrol is about the same as here. Digs are reasonable and nearly always spotless and with good service. The road surface is good except around farm and field entrances. Any town we stayed would have live music somewhere
I’m 100% sure everyone would enjoy it. Rico did on the Tuono.

Just done some provisional research. To make it out for the moto GP using the ferry would need to be via Santander & outward Tuesday 11th June - Return Sat 22nd June. So a 10 dayer.

Anyone up for it.  I havent looked at cost yet??

Could always go over the channel & do the road trip.

Any thoughts.

Other option may be to use the economie service ship that has limited facilities but there is a bar & cafe ???

Mick, I just put Calais to Barcelona in the via Michelin route planner on their Discovery route (to try and avoid Motorways) and it comes out as 847 miles and 25 hours 41 mins.

Santander to Barcelona comes out as 480 miles and 12 hours 37 mins.

Would probably work out cheaper going down through France but would take about 3 days unless you hit the motorways.

How important is the Moto GP.  might be better leaving it a week or two & just touring around the area, could get the ferry to Santander on 25th June spend a night in Pamplona, make way to Barcelona for the weekend then get the ferry back from Bilbao on 3rd July after a bit more touring around.

Other Alternative s could Be Moto GP at Assen & Hoon around Germany Belgia & Netherlands / France.   or taking a week to get to the saschennring then home. Not sure whther the roads would be a bit boring or not.

Spent a bit of time on research today. Problems with Moto GP mid June & Running the bulls in Pamplona beginning of July & seasonal Price hikes from mid July onwards the only week that would fit would be Plymouth Santander 30th June make way to Barcelona for 2 nights then back up North.  Ferry frpm Santander 8th July - arriving Portsmouth 9th July   rough cost Based on two sharing £1400 for two.
Dont know what the roads are like on way down to Barcelona but thats a rough idea. I can do a bit of route planning if theres any support for the idea.

I'm not bothered about Moto GP, it's twisty roads and sticky tyres I'm interested in, plus a beer or two.  eat4

Thanks chaps,I managed to push the undergrowth aside on the way out of hibernation.
As already said, I wouldn't be bothered about the Moto GP, it creates busy roads and ferries.
Sounds good to me TM.
If you want racing go to the Classic endurance meeting at Spa, cracking weekend.

Spa Classic Endurance racing I was on about. I loves me a bit of Classic Endurance Racing, I did the Bol D'or about 3 or 4 years ago and the Classics racing were better than the modern stuff. Spa has always been on my to-do list but I can't find the 2019 dates listed.

So if the moto gp is not important why can't we stick with the July trip that fitted in with more people?

Then we can get back to sensible prices around £500 each for 2 sharing when booking a Brittany Ferry holiday

Revert back to any suggestions. I started taking a look at Portugal as well, again would be best to do 8 nights + 2 onboard to make the most of the journey.  What were the dates sugested ?

8th July onward

I can only do 7 days as I can only take 5 days off at that time

Suppose we could travel on the Saturday or Sunday to fit in an extra day

My personal choice would be to go with the warmer weather, better tarmac and least traffic - that's why I have always loved northern Spain so Pyrenees or Portugal work for me.

Like the idea for Ireland but that's more of a 3/4 day fest - no idea what the roads are like for condition or traffic but from the Nobster's reports it sounds like it's gentle bimble / sight seeing trip.  Particularly as it's most likely to be raining 50% of the time

Black Forrest is brill - I have only spent one day there - weather is usually good and there are mountains reasonably close also the traffic is not bad from my experience

If we can achieve some sort of consensus I am happy to start booking ferries etc.

How about a vote?  Or do we go with the person that has the strongest wish for a particular place

Which ever we go for provided there is a decent turn out a good time will be had by all

So can we get some agreement and make a decision?

I'm easy.

It worked out well travelling out on the Sunday Plymouth - Santander Then returning on the Monday - Santander - Portsmouth.  The journey is a few hours shorter around 20hrs & departure is around 10.00pm from Plymouth

The ferry gets in around Midday which means you could get at least a good couple of hundred miles travelling West from Santander on arrrival day.  Travelling back on the Monday to Portsmouth.  Entails an extra day oveerseas &  one more nights accom.

Just a suggestion - thoughts.

The area around Vila Real looks like the centre of the best biking roads in northern Portugal. It's in the middle of the mountains and loads of routes to the coast or further inland.

Looking at locations of Brittany ferries hotels.

If the Plymouth - Santander ferry was taken arriving in Santander around Midday say 1.00pm by the time customs have been cleared it would be a 232 mile trip to Vilalba to this place in Northern Spain which is doable.

http://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/holiday-search/Spain/galicia/Vilalba/hotels/HS1135/st/directions?fsid=14587&pricedate=2019-01-01

From there into Portugal on second day.

Heres the Map of Brittany ferry hotels. Take a look & see what you think.  Theres a few Hotels between Vila Real, the coast & Porto. Do you think one hotel or touring around.  Can everyone manage Sunday to following Monmday ie 8 days away from home.   would need to spend the last night near Santander.

What about this place as a base.

I reckon stay in one place, it rains in Portugal near the coast and it's not fun touring in the wet. Any really wet days can be spent exploring the local watering holes. It looks like a plan is forming and I hope the Brummy Boys are coming along on their tractors.

I'm easy, last week on June or beginning of July. Vinny has suggested around the second week of July is best for him. Ferry from Plymouth is on Sunday evenings or from Portsmouth on the Tuesday as we've done previously. This allows for either a 9 or 7 day trip.

I'm inclined to go out on the 7th July from Plymouth & Come home leaving Spain on the 15th July arriving back to Portsmouth on the 16th which is what I will put to my brother & Co. I'll get a cost on Monday.

I've just put the first shot across the bows with Brittany ferries who have come back with an initial price of £1404 based on two sharing. They are going to pass on to the holiday admin team who will look at it tomorrow & maybe come back with a better price.

Details:

depart Plymouth Sunday 7th July approx 15.45 hours

Arrive in Santander around 12.00 noon.

Nt 1 Vilalba HS1135 approx 230 miles

Nts 2,3,4 HO0012 Guimares  approx 200 miles, local touring for 3 days

Nt 5 Leon HS1339 Approx 200 miles

Nt 5&6 Potes HS0174 100 miles

Depart Ferry Monday 15th July Santander - Arrive Tuesday 16th Portsmouth

I've allowed for a couple of nights in the Picos on the way back staying at the same hotel as last year although this could be altered to stay in Cangas di onis for two nights or the Infantado in Ojedo if theres any preferance.

Thoughts on a post card please.

Emailed em Last November:
EDIT - Found the email:

Thanks for your enquiry and sorry about the delayed response.

Can you please tell me the makes and models of your bikes please as this may have a bearing on the shipping cost.  If they are standard sized large bikes like GS’s or Multistrada etc then the round-trip price for 2018 would be £625.00 including VAT and insurance, however if they are really large such as Goldwing or large American type cruisers the cost would be more.

Bike are shipped mounted on purpose made transport cradles like you see in the attached photos, that protect them in transit, panniers remain attached and helmets and riding gear can also be sent forward with the bikes.

Hope to hear further from you,  kind regards

Tony Barker

Also,  you have to get ya bike to Manchester and yourself home if your not flying the same day... and the reverse if you use it both ways

Then there is the flight costs too.

When I looked at it it was cheaper to get the hull + Denmark ferry but that wasn't cheap either.

But if time is the issue then it will work for some.

Bloody shame they stopped the direct ferry from south shields...

North Shields, but yes it is a shame. I'm sure more Brits go to Norway now than ten or twenty years ago but maybe less Norwegians are coming to Britain and they were the ones who spent the money onboard the ferries.

I reckon the trip could be shortenned to 1 week travelling Sunday:  Plymouth to Santander.  Would just need to adjust the itinery but reckon could manage 3 nights in the same hotel in Portugal, two touring hotel nights there & back & two nights on the ferry.

would this be more favourable??

Option 1 as above 7nights away approx £1049.00 per pair.  £525.00 each

Epic, sod the Pico's the roads in Portugal were stunning and traffic free. First day there we did the A103, 155 miles of constant bends with maybe 3 straights of a quarter mile maximum. It took 5 hours to do the 155 miles and then we had to turn around and head home as the bar was calling. Second day we headed down into Porto on the coast as it was too hot inland. 3rd day we headed for Spain along the 206, another stunning road and completely car free, Spain was Spain, more traffic and poorer road surfaces but Leon was rocking at night, in fact it was rocking until 3am when the bars started closing  eat9.
Next year it'll be Portugal for me with a couple of stop overs in Leon …….. just to be sociable.

great stuff, keep em coming.  Your right about the lack of traffic once you are inland and away from the coast. Me and Wee Mo went for miles on similar empty brill roads too. Cyclists and heaps those wee half arse sized tractor/traler buggy things though so ye need tae keep an eye oot

Interesting to hear about Leon as I decided to skip it as kindo prefer the smaller town vibe so we stopped a night at Astorga just to the west.  Did drive through Leon tho on way back to Picos, looked nice.   Maybe next time  happy88

Gr8 pics - sounds like you had a brill time - shame I could not be there but 7 days max is my limit for trips - plus it was Mrs V's birthday on 15th

Good idea for next year - is it doable as a 7 day trip?

Yes, Braganca is about 270 miles from Santander or 5-6 hours riding on the main roads. A stop over in Leon either on the way there or back would be better though.
