Going away with the Mrs in September so won't be able to join you on this one. I'll be interested to hear how it goes though cos I've not ridden in the Pyrenees yet and the riding's supposed to be pretty good there.

Trip is all booked managed to get ferry & accommodation b&b all in for £570 each  exc1

If anyone is interested happy to book it for you - Brittany Ferries 20% discount ends 5th February - booking with 2 people sharing keeps the price sensible

Never been to any of the places before - roads look good on google earth and there are some good comments on "best biking roads"

10th Sept Portsmouth to Santander land 18:15 on 11th
11th Santander to Pamplona a bit of a slog over 2 hrs duel carrigeways 158 miles  lookup1
12th Fun Starts Pamplona to Bielsa about 5hrs 214 miles  tuono;
13th Bielsa to Canillo in Andorra 4hrs  182 miles  tuono;
14th Circular route Canillo 6hrs 226 miles tuono;
15th Canillo to Huesca heading towards Santander 5hrs 215 miles  tuono;
16th Huesca to Santander 5 hrs 262 miles back on duel carriageways  frown1

That will be ok, despite the filthy habits he has. But hold off 24 hrs because I have just asked my mate when his holidays are cos he might be interested in joining us.

Also: when do you want the money, as I'm better paying soon whilst I've got it, due to this divorce of mine.

love andora, loads a bike shops around andora la vella , and as you probably no its all tax free good for cigs, alcohol, cameras ect, avoid there rush hour
as every thing comes to a halt for about an hour with police directing traffic, weather is probably like Scotland you can get 4 seasons in a day

Post by: Vinny on February 01, 2019, 10:23:05 pm
Hi FUDS

I was talking to Ali the other night about the routes etc and I just wanted to clarify the last day

We are travelling from Huesca to Santander it's a 261 mile run

Ferry leaves at 3:15pm so we need to arrive a the port 2:30pm - it's 5 hours riding time  plus say 30 min break and 30 min traffic

The roads are decent main roads or duel carriage way and motorway so we should be able to keep a decent pace

Allowing 6 hrs we should go for an 8:30 am start time earlier if you wish.

I know it's a long way off but if anyone feels unhappy now is the time to make a change - this would mean me trying to find a hotel closer to the port

The way it's planed gives us the best amount of time enjoying the good roads

Hopefully you have all checked out the routes and are happy with the plan - please let me know if you think anything needs a rethink

I'm perfectly happy with what you've done V. Only thing I'd suggest is maybe setting off a bit earlier the last day and doing the first stretch on decent roads and the second a quick blast up the motorway. Not arsed really either way. The ride home is always a bit of an anti climax anyway.
Plenty of time to fine tune things   yes sir

I think we should be ok when we're in France without the stickers but have a look anyhow.

Sorry for causing the confusion I mean't tolls on a section of Spanish motorway

Away from home a bit knackered and had a few beers - well that's my excuse

Title: Re: Pyrenees Trip September 10th to 17th
Post by: Aldo on May 01, 2019, 08:52:21 pm
V, I've found a map of Spanish toll motorways and the only toll section we're on is from Bilbao to Vitoria on day 1 and the reverse on day 6.

The other motorways we're on are free.

I'll look for more info on this,,,,,,something similar to the site Rico posted about a tag type system that allows you to breeze through the tolls without stopping.

IVE DONE SANTANDER TO VICTORIA TO PAMPOLINA to andora  ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO AND NEVER HAD TO bung, so unless things have changed you won't have to bung ,just don't go into victoria as you will get lost, well we did as its strange there s not many roads out of that place

Title: Re: Pyrenees Trip September 10th to 17th
Post by: Vinny on May 01, 2019, 09:57:34 pm
That looks pretty good to me Ali - I like the idea of being able to simply get a tag that allows you to ride through the toll booth and automatically charges your account

We would all need to register individually - but this would be far better than having to sort out the correct change etc

Have not worked out where / how you fit the tag on the bike

Title: Re: Pyrenees Trip September 10th to 17th
Post by: Vinny on May 01, 2019, 10:11:59 pm
Looks like you can pay with cash or card toll charge is currently 5.60 euros - this means the cost of setting up the tag is simply not worthwhile

Be careful you don't get charged about £2 every time you use your card. I know in France when ever I filled up with petrol using my debit card I was charged about £1.80, cash is king unless you have one of the pre-paid Euro credit card thingeys.

Don't have proper access to my email but I reckon there will be more to pay for the cost of the ferry as the above is for the accommodation with Brittany ferries
We also have to pay separately for the hotel in Andora
The total should be about £600
Soon as I get home I will confirm everything

Lads, I have to pull out. Most of you know we’ve been struggling to find a new home since coming back from Ireland. Well, we’ve found one exactly where we want to be. The down side is it’s a full refurb that will take all my time and dough for the next few months.
Apologies if it adds to the cost to you, but keep my deposit and buy a round  yes sir

Is there anyone that is able to take yoozy's place?

The booking is for two people so reducing this to one will have a major impact on cost for the remaining place.

I will Check with Brittany Ferries tomoz

The accommodation is paid in full so I do not know the cancellation policy.

Managed to speak to Brittany Ferries but have to wait until tomorrow to speak to Holiday Admin Team for the definitive answer

Provided I cancel the Ferry crossing before 12th July only the deposit is lost

Concerning the accommodation the news is not so good

The accommodation can be reduced to a single room but this carries a single occupancy charge to be confirmed - also there is a  £25 administration fee - we loose the cabin that was included with the holiday for two - we then pay separately for a cabin for one.

The advice so far is to not change the accommodation booking and swallow the cost of the extra person as this will be cheaper.

Just out of interest Brittany do not give any refunds they just provide a voucher that has to be used within 12 months.

So provided the remaining 7 are willing we will all have to pay £340.40 divided 7 ways £48.63 each

In addition there will be the cost of cancelling the Hotel in Andora - probably just be a single occupancy charge for two nights say a total of £60 split 7 ways £8.57

So the likely total extra cost is £57.20 each

Gents please let me know your thoughts about splitting the extra cost - does this make it affordable for any one?

Are there any other FUDS or friends fancy taking the place?

Brittany ferries keep the deposit so no free round just increased cost

Just got off the phone after an hour speaking with the Holiday Admin Team

So as to not to incur the final ferry booking cost of £201.45 I have to cancel the booking by 10th July - otherwise the payment will automatically be taken on 12th July

They have agreed to amend the name on the booking at no additional charge - so if we can find a replacement by 10th July all is good no cost implications.

If we have to cancel there is nothing we can do concerning the accommodation booking - the alternatives i.e. change to a single person actually increase the costs - and it would seem that there is no availability for single rooms so we would be charged for the twin room any way - this is all to do with the rates we got for the original deal

I have not yet contacted the hotel in Andora - best to do this once we know if there is a replacement

Any questions, ideas or suggestions give me a call, email or PM on the forum

Now have it confirmed that the Pont Aven will now be sailing from Plymouth to Santander and return for the remainder of this year

The reason is because the ship now has only 3 serviceable engines so she has been placed on a shorter route due to the slower speed.

The times will change slightly just waiting on written confirmation - but from what I can tell they work slightly better for us particularly coming home as we will have more time to reach Santander

So all good

ASH, what bike are you taking mate?? I'm wondering what to do, Transalp is slow but good on my wrists and plenty luggage.
When I say slow.....I get beaten by vans when I'm out. Seriously!
Tuono is lacking luggage mounts and I'm not drilling my carbon seat! Plus my old wrists, plus the high pegs.
If only the Transalp was 30 mph faster..

Vinny, if I decide to go on the Tuono do I have to change the booking with Brittany Ferries?

I've a Bagster/Baglux tank cover and tank bag you can borrow if you want, if someone is passing mine and heading north they can pick it up and pass it on. A bit like the pony express, Tuony Express? There are no problems with changing bike make & registration

This can  e done via a short phone call just send me the detail best done before the tickets arrive so by the end of July would be fine.

As I said you  can  borrow my throw over Oxford planners if you wish.

I reckon you will enjoy the roads far more on the T.

At this point in time I will be on my MT10, although that could change as I am possibly looking to change it to an as yet unknown bike, probably something similar to the MT10.

Right chaps, just a little bit off the wall here, when we go to Andorra we have two nights there, the hotel is booked but not paid for yet and it occurred to me that it might be a good opportunity for a team TW photo under the Millau Bridge, it might be possible if we went that way and stopped over, it's about 235Km into France which is a bit of a long haul for a day out, but is do-able I suppose.
Just an idea and I don't mind being flamed for the thought.

Not yet Aldo, on the last day we're doing a loop around Andorra I think, I'll look at it and see if it's possible with digs etc.

Right, I'm not stepping on anyone's toes here, just making a suggestion, there is accommodation / restaurants etc available in Millau itself.
As for a route, follow somebody's sat-nav.

I don't know how binding Mike's booking is, but it has to be paid when we arrive.

I shouldn't post late at night really, been a bad day, the wife is poorly.  frown1

Probably me being  knob;

Happy for anyone to come up with alternative routes - Hotels are fixed barring the Andora Hotel - this could be cancelled with cancellation fees it is reserved on my credit card so they can take any fees they apply from memory there is a sliding scale dependent upon how late we cancel

My only requirement is that the day has equally good roads to ride on as those I have picked - I did this be using google earth to view the roads, this is not always fool proof

Last thing I want to do is have a crap days riding so that I can have a photograph by an impressive bridge

However you have to ensure that wherever you go we finish within riding distance of the final hotel for the night before the ferry - the travelling distance on the day we sail back is already a good ride - it has been made easier by the later sailing time so I was going to pick a route missing out the motorway and hence a longer but nicer day

Hope this makes sense look forward to seeing any alternatives

Reminder of the plan as it stands

10th Sept Plymouth to Santander land 17:30 on 11th - timing is better than previous but a longer ride due to the change to Plymouth

11th Santander to Pamplona a bit of a slog over 2 hrs duel carrigeways 158 miles

12th Fun Starts Pamplona to Bielsa about 5hrs 214 miles

13th Bielsa to Canillo in Andorra 4hrs  182 miles

14th Circular route Canillo 6hrs 226 miles

15th Canillo to Huesca heading towards Santander 5hrs 215 miles

16th Huesca to Santander ferry at 18:00 was 5 hrs 262 miles but I need to find a better route now the ferry leaves later so will be slightly more miles and longer hours

I've looked at it today Mike and it would involve two long days with big miles on roads not known, I'll leave it at your default settings.  happy88

Next year I think.

Went to Millau abut 6 years back on way to Carcassonne and it's certainly an impressive big bit of engineering and Millau itself was quite a good place to have night out and several beers but I reckon it's quite a bit of a hike from Andorra/Pyrenees. It took us a good days ride to get to Carcassonne from Millau if I remember right and Andoora is a fair but further.

All of the possible replacements for Yoozy have responded with no takers - I have tried 8 people and Slim 2 or 3

Do any of you know someone that may wish to join the Fest?

What about DOT?

We have just a few more days before I have to cancel the ferry booking for the one bike

And let's just hope that there aren't any "crap days riding" on the route Mike's chosen,
like I said I'll do it next year.

By the way, I'm only joking as I wouldn't mind seeing the bridge. Being a glass half empty type, sometimes these landmarks are a let down when viewed in the flesh.

Try switching from Miles to KM's, once you pass 100,000 km (62,137 miles) the clocks can't do the conversion to miles so revert back to zero+ miles.

Duc Glasgow send you a vid by the tech dude that's worked on yer machine, gave me an advisory for a wee stone chip on the front wheel.   frown1

I'll give the machine and chain a good clean the weekend before we leave, apart from the chain clean I think doing the rest of the machine is a bit of wasted time.

Always good to have your machine nice and clean but one wee wet spell over nearly 500 miles to Plymouth and it'll look manky.

If you already have the side rails then you could just make the u-shaped hoop from the correct size tube.

as you say the weight sits on the rear seat - I reckon you have the skills to do it

Which is worth more the £150 or your time spent fettling?

Why does the weight sit on the seat ?
On the T.... the rack is turned around so the bag sits on the rack which sits above the seat or "cover"...

Hey F
I don't turn my rack round. I sit the bag on the seat with the pocket over the hoop.

I can then use a sports bag on the rack as a day bag for easy access

Works for me

I can see the sense of having the weight on the seat... just that I never fit the seat so don't want it sat on the cover...
A day bag hanging over the back will make sod all difference too...

The base on the rack is for if you've got a pillion and need the seat, you have it hanging over the back then. They recommend bigger bags to sit on the seat and to use the base for smaller bags that zip on to the bigger one. That's how I had mine Felix if I didn't need much tackle, but if I was away for a week I'd take the pod odd off, fit the seat and drop it on that. It goes down the rack a bit bor anorl and feels a bit more secure.
I'd only need a loop for the back no matter which way I had it facing with the Mutley having a luggage rack/rail thingy anyroads.

Ventura rack:
Always have the bottom of the bag support rack to the rear.
The bag itself loaded towards the front, with it's weight on the rear seat. This helps with CoG.
If you don't have a rear passenger seat, cover top surface of seat cowl and rear tail unit with loads of gaffa tape to avoid marking. You can now use the back of the rack for additional utilities/toolbag/tent...whatever.

What tyres did you go for Roy?
I've booked mine in for a service on 2nd Sept and will probably get tyres at the same time, I've had Dunlop Sportsmarts on ( 120/70 & 180/55) and could go same again, or try something else.
I've fitted the rack Geoff gave me via Slim and my mate has lent me a big top box that sticks so far out the back you'd think it was a trailer!
And I've got some new boots & waterproofs too. Though (jinxing it) it says on the weather stats that September is usually pretty dry in the Pyrenees.
Has anybody taken insurance out or breakdown cover?

Evil most insurance companies wont quote for a bike over 10 years old a couple go up to 15 years. Yours is what 17/18 years old, I went with the AA single trip breakdown cover. Think it was about £90 iirc. https://www.theaa.com/european-breakdown-cover/
The cheapest way is for none of you to get insurance but if someone does break down or crash then you all chip in and pay for a van to the ferry port.

Never had any rot away but when I've replaced them on other bikes I've noticed some pistons come as a hollow tube, some have an end cap. I've replaced capped ones with tubes and they work just the same.

St tyres will be slightly softer in the middle than the GT, sport tour, grand tour, so the back will last longer and a bit more grip on the front? I have Conti road attack on the back and sport attack on the front, similar stuff, works for me.

Last time I went to Switzerland the border guard gestured to us to open the throttle and go for it. They are hot on people not having a motorway carnet though, love an instant fine they do. Hi-Viz vests, reflective patches, alcohol testers, GB stickers, the sooner we're out of the EU the better before we have to carry all that shit.

Hi-Viz etc I was talking about the Pyrenees trip.
Switzerland has a border check, we had to stop and they checked the first persons documents then they waved the rest of us through. France and Britain are in the EU, there's still border checks at Calais and Dover. Same when you go to Spain from GB.

All down to how dubious a character you look.

Hell Roy and Ali may have trouble big grin1

Never get accurate forecasts for mountainous regions. they reckon 48 hrs is about as long range as you can rely on

check out meteoblue.com      supposed to give decent forecasts for the area.

From what I can see 20 - 24 degrees in the day time and chilly evenings 7 to 9 degrees mainly dry & sunny with light clouds  happy88
They quote a 40% to 50% predictability this far ahead i.e. a trend but  90% for 4 days ahead. ey1

Averages say that September is the driest month for the Pyrenees what5

fuck me mike...it must av been falling to fuckin bits man.

It included the Pirelli Angel GT II s @ £231, full service inc valves (though they were ok), rear suspension linkage bearings, sleeves & seals were knackered, new bolts helicoiled on rear caliper, plugs, filters, bulb, & labour @ £295 and the VAT was £150!
Chain & sprockets were checked and didn't need replacement.

Went up to the Classic Bike meet at Wray nr Lancaster last night, bike was running great. Didn't like the last bit of the ride home in the dark though, disadvantage of only having 1 eye is poor night vision.
Was wondering whether I should buy a new Arai visor because it was a fair bit clearer with it flipped up. Anybody know a bike clothing shop en-route to Plymouth that might fit one for me?

Today I've rung Adrian Flux and there's no charge for bike insurance, they're sending a certificate confirming my fully comp uk cover will apply whilst in France & Spain.
I organised breakdown recovery with the AA for £92 and travel insurance silver standard for medical etc for £22, which seemed ok to me.

I was going to stop at my sister's on the way down Monday night, but when I mentioned this to Vinny he kindly invited me to stay at his place and we'll ride down to Plymouth together on Tuesday.
I can always see my sister on the way back if I want.

Bike recovery was a bit pricey £40 to £50 should have covered it - they can be a bit difficult once a bit is over 5 years old

I have personal cover via RAC so it applies to any thing I am driving

Feels good to know you've done all you can to ensure the bike is prepped ready to go  happy88

V, my recovery for anything I drive or are in is with the AA and when I did my euro breakdown with them it was discounted from £90 something to £44.

I read the small print just to make sure I was paying for what I wanted/needed and the discounted 44 notes was by far the cheapest I could find.

Dunno Roy mate....they're pretty accurate these days.
At worst they give you the chance to be properly geared up for it.
GoreTex..etc...lots.

Ali... take a few sea sickness tabs, and try to sleep through it.
Common sense stuff....lots of water.....eat very little, but often.
Take a few sachets of rehydrate to mix with water.
That way, if the worst DOES happen, when the rocking stops, you'll feel heaps better, much quicker.
You won't end up with that shitty 'washed out' feeling.

Tuesday is dry and fine for the run to Plymouth be nice to get off as early as we can

Tuesday / Wednesday weather for Bay of Biscay doesn't look too bad - the strong winds seem to be across the western side of the UK

you lot might want to pack a spare bike key, on my last trip abroad Tim lost his key's down the lift shaft. I've also doubled the video refresh rate for future vids as these are too flickery, not sure what went wrong with the sound, though I changed the lens to the waterproof one.

45 euro if paid within 46 days by credit/debit card on line
68 euro if paid 47-76 days by credit debit card on line
then 180 + court increases if not paid by 77 days....
i will pay the 45 as they can apply to our courts to enforce  the violation notice ....but if a frog was caught speeding over here  the uk courts cant enforce it in europe wtf is that about??

ah got nailed in Spain in June crossin a double white line efter being stuck behind a wagon for miles.   Sods law it was right where a plod car was sat who radio,d ahead tae another a couple o miles doon the road and ah got pulled in.

Had tae use google translate tae understand them and they wir playing good cop bad cop wi me for ages checkin this and checkin that, then back an forth on thir radios. Ye wid o thought ah wiz haulin half a ton o cocaine or sumfin.

The "bad one" also wanted tae do me for no havin my country of origin and the blue bar on number plate but the other one talked him oot it.

Fine wiz 200euros or 100 if paid on the spot....even got a printed receipt as they are affy organised.  So thats ma reg number n drivin licence now logged in the Spanish system for the future.  Better behave next time  winking1

Am shittin masel fir a move a made when a had the lead on the way tae Huesca.

Long line of traffic in front of me, long straight road and fukkall comin the other way.

A horsed it past the line of traffic and as a past the last car a looked at ma satnav only to see a fixed camera warning exit the screen.

Nae idea whit speed a topped oot at but it wiznae slow.   jaw drop1z

u should be awright there ah wid think.   Think maist o the fixed cameras I saw in France and Spain were front facing.

French ones are typically a wee pillar sort o thing at the side o the road and the Spanish ones mair like large grey cabinets, usually just passed a flyover bridge or similar structure.

Hopefully ye will hae got away wi it  happy88

I suppose the only upside is if you get caught it is only a fine with no points

Still not great but better than UK.

To be honest I am surprised anyone has picked up a ticket. We were fairly careful in the places that were likely to attract the police.

We were all doing the same speed as each other and the traffic in front of us when we got flashed. I was behind Roy I think.
We were just coasting downhill on a big road, not in a built up area.
After I got flashed I looked at my speedo and it said 97.
Roy's ticket is for 93 in an 80KM zone (58 in a 50 MPH).
So any one of us might get a ticket.
If I don't get a letter I'm happy to split Roy's with him as it could just as easily been me.

No, but I found the details of the road that we did up near the viewing platform on that short day.

I wasn't fazed by having not bringing a map, I wasn't the only one though, although it would've been handy for when the tech went belly up, I did have access to maps via the phone, but it wasn"t an issue for me, I enjoyed the trip and will look to do something next year.

Hi Ali
Could not agree more it was a crackin days riding in to Spain then France around 330 miles of twisty up and down mountain roads  happy57 tuono; tuono; tuono; tuono;

I would quite happily avoid Andorra just because of the speed cameras.  That little restaurant was worth the visit though excellent food and great welcome from our host  eat9 eat4

Problem with not knowing the Pyrenees we had to travel a bit to find the good stuff - now I reckon we know enough to maybe just have two centers  - but it is much further to ride than Picos

Sailing to Bilbao would save a few miles and a little time

V .... sounds like you all had a good time whatever route you took    happy119

i went  out to Santander and back via Bilbao..... not by good planning.... purely by choice of dates of return.... your right tho .... every bit helps.

Best tip i was given before i set off was to look up anything that the TDF or any route any other cycling race took..... basically anything that started Col d' "whatever"...

The Pyries has it all..... fast roads / twisty roads / stunning scenery - take your pick.

The 2 pics i have that really hit the spot for me were:

This one to show that i achieved my goal of coast to coast:

and this one to remind me why i wanted to go in the first place:

Not many places i would return to on a biking holl - big wide world - so much to see..... but i cant help feeling that there is so much more to see in the Pyrenees....

Best biking trip ive ever had.
